Remote Onboarding: A 30-Day Playbook That Actually Lands New Hires

May 1, 2025 · 8 min read

Remote onboarding fails for the same reasons every quarter: no human shape, no clear week-one wins, and no manager involvement. A 30-day playbook that fixes all three.

Pre-day-one

Laptop arrives 5 business days before start. Welcome video from the team — not the CEO. Manager calendar invite for day-one is the first meeting on the new hire's screen.

Week 1

One 1:1 with the manager every day for the first week (15 minutes each — short, intentional). One peer lunch (over Zoom is fine if remote). One shipped artefact, however small, by Friday.

Weeks 2-4

Three structured goals tied to ramp. Weekly check-in with HR or a buddy outside the immediate team. End-of-30-days review with the manager — explicit yes/no on whether ramp is on track.

The data

Customers who run this playbook see 90-day attrition drop 40-60% versus the 'here's your laptop, good luck' baseline.
